Overview

AVI format is a multimedia container which contains both audio and video data in a file container that allows synchronous audio-with-video playback.

AVI files can be played by various video players which support codec used to encode AVI video data. However, AVI file is never compatible with Apple applications including Final cut express, Final Cut Pro. If you are trying to add AVI files from File > Import, the AVI files will not available for select. Solution

To import AVI to Final Cut Express, converting AVI to MPEG-4 or HD MPEG-4 is recommended. Others may have the specific needs to convert AVI to MOV, M4V or DV.
